Established in 1988 by visionaries within the Asian Sepaktakraw Federation (ASTAF), the International Sepaktakraw Federation (ISTAF) is the undisputed international governing body for the sport of Sepaktakraw, recognised as such by the Olympic Movement. Officially based in Thailand and with its Secretariat in Singapore, ISTAF has benefited both from a healthy continuity of leadership and from the incredible drive displayed by its executive.
Under the stewardship of ISTAF President, Maj. Gen. Charouck Ariracharakan, and its long-serving Secretary General, Dato’ Abdul Halim Kader (often described as the hardest-working man in the sport), ISTAF has today grown to represent over 30 member associations, and a budding international Sepaktakraw community throughout Europe, Oceania and the Americas.
Under ISTAF’s expert guidance, Sepaktakraw has enjoyed medal-sport status at the South-East Asian Games since 1965, and uninterrupted medal status at the Asian Games since 1990. It was also introduced as a demonstration sport at the 2009 World Games in Chinese Taipei.

The Emblem of ISTAF shall consist of a Gold Sepaktakraw ball, with the words ‘INTERNATIONAL SEPAKTAKRAW FEDERATION’, (in red) almost fully encircling the ball. Beneath the ball shall be the word ISTAF in jet black. Beneath the words shall be two olive green laurel leaves placed such that they resemble the wings of an eagle in flight.
The Gold Sepaktakraw ball signifies the very essence of ISTAF, without which the Federation will not exist. The color Gold signifies the ultimate goal of the Federation, seeing the spread of the game throughout the world culminating in the Gold medal match of the Olympic Games.
Both names, International Sepaktakraw Federation and ISTAF appear on the emblem as they are the two official names the Federation will be known by.
The colour red signifies vibrancy as it is the very essence of the game. The olive green laurel leaves signify youth, growth and the spirit of fair play. They are placed in the formation of the wings of an eagle in flight, as one of ISTAF’s primary objectives is to make the game of Sepaktakraw ‘soar to new heights’.
MAJ. GEN. CHAROUCK ARRIRACHAKARAN | President of the International Sepaktakraw Federation (ISTAF)
Sepaktakraw may be one of Asia’s oldest and most traditional sports, but we are also an incredible sport, with huge appeal for modern sports fans. Combining so many different athletic skills in such an explosive way, Sepaktakraw is naturally made for modern television.
The inclusion of Sepaktakraw as a competitive event at the 17th Asian Games in Incheon, Korea in 2014, and 14thAsian Beach Games 2014 in Phuket, Thailand, is a testimony to the continuing success that ISTAF has achieved in its effort to bring the sport of Sepaktakraw to global audiences. From its humble beginnings to being a regional sporting event, Sepaktakraw has now been effectively elevated to the status of an internationally recognised sport with even greater ambitions.
With ISTAF continuing its expansion in the international sports arena, the standard of Sepaktakraw at all levels has increased tremendously, thanks to the concerted efforts of the international Sepaktakraw fraternity.
ISTAF’s global partnership with UFA Sports Asia, and now Asia Sports Ventures, has indeed brought about the much-needed boost for the sport – bringing it in line with the marketing and broadcast standards required of any sport seeking international recognition and success.
The ISTAF World Cup and the ISTAF SuperSeries, the world’s first and only international platforms for showcasing Sepaktakraw, will most certainly increase the competitive levels, profile, and appeal of the sport, and will undoubtedly pave the way for a new era of Sepaktakraw players and fans.
The task of introducing Sepaktakraw to the world is unrelenting, and I am grateful that ISTAF, together with its international membership, are all deeply involved in bringing the sport into the international arena.
DATO’ ABDUL HALIM KADER, BBM | Secretary General of the International Sepaktakraw Federation (ISTAF)
The inclusion of Sepaktakraw as an Exhibition Sport at the 2009 World Games 2009, Kaohsiung, Chinese Taipei, marked a significant milestone in the efforts made by the International Sepaktakraw Federation (ISTAF) to attain medal-status at the Summer Olympic Games. It is now the responsibility of ISTAF to convince the leadership of the International World Games Association (IWGA) to accept ISTAF as a full member of IWGA. This can only be made possible through the hard work and dedication of the entire Sepaktakraw fraternity.
ISTAF’s global partnership with UFA Sports Asia, and now Asia Sports Ventures, has entirely transformed the sport, bestowing upon Sepaktakraw the much-needed financial resources and technical know-how for it to forge ahead into the future with renewed vigor and optimism.
The pinnacle of competitive international Sepaktakraw, the ISTAF World Cup, represents the flagship of the new ISTAF tournament calendar, and is the single biggest and most prestigious tournament in the illustrious history of the sport. Held bi-seasonally, this pre-eminent Sepaktakraw tournament will determine the men’s and women’s Sepaktakraw World Champions. Together with UFA Sports Asia, we also launched the annual ISTAF SuperSeries, the sport’s only elite competition where the world’s best Sepaktakraw teams battle it out for the men’s and women’s SuperSeries championship titles.
The newly-developed ISTAF World Rankings system, derived from participation in the ISTAF World Cup and the ISTAF SuperSeries tournaments, will serve as the official qualifiers to the Sepaktakraw competition at the Asian Games, and other international multi-sport games to which Sepaktakraw is included as a medal-sport.
Whilst overseeing delivery of the new ISTAF tournaments to world-class standards, Asia Sports Ventures will continue to produce and deliver live and innovative broadcast coverage of the ISTAF World Cup and the ISTAF SuperSeries to a global audience. Asia Sports Venture’s new TV and broadcast concept has been carefully assembled, and has, in less than two years, created genuine commercial value for, whilst at the same time showcasing the spectacular qualities of, the sport which make Sepaktakraw simply breathtaking to watch.
Indeed under the enterprising and collaborative partnership with Asia Sports Ventures, Sepaktakraw has finally taken the ‘step-up’ to becoming a world-class sport, capturing the imagination of millions of fans around the world.
The future is bright. The future is Sepaktakraw.
